The new executive bureau of the South West Regional Assembly officially assumed office following a solemn swearing-in ceremony at the Court of Appeal in Buea on Thursday, January 29. The eight-member bureau, led by President Zacheus Bakoma Elango, took the oath before Chief Justice Ngute Paul accompanied by Governor of the South West region Benard Okalia Bilai amongst other dignitaries.
Elected on December 16, 2025, after regional elections were held on November 30, the newly installed bureau marks the beginning of a new mandate aimed at advancing the region’s decentralization agenda.

President Zacheus Bakoma Elango expressed confidence that the lessons learned during the assembly’s first mandate will enhance governance and service delivery.
“The experience we acquired during the first mandate will enable us to work even better to serve the population of the South West region,” Bakoma Elango stated.
He assured residents of their commitment to public service, reflecting on their readiness to implement effective governance strategies based on previous experiences. President Bakoma Elango further revealed that funding for the construction of the South West Regional Assembly headquarters has been secured, with a contract expected to be signed in the coming weeks.
Additionally, rehabilitation works on the Bangem-Tombel and other roads are set to commence later this year. These key infrastructure projects aim to boost connectivity and stimulate economic activities in local communities.
He took the opportunity to express gratitude to municipal and regional councilors for renewing their confidence in the executive team.He pledged that the bureau would remain dedicated to serving the population, reinforcing their commitment to transparency.The swearing-in ritual was not merely a ceremonial event; it marked the official entry into office and granted legal legitimacy to the members of the regional executive bureau. By taking the oath, each member formally accepted the responsibilities entrusted to them.
