The Directorate of the College of Technology (COLTECH) at the University of Bamenda has issued a crucial warning to all students regarding unauthorized payment requests.
In a press release dated January 23, 2026, Professor Tsi Evaristus Angwafo, Director of the College of Technology, emphasized that any payment requested beyond the official school registration fee is illegal. Students are advised to remain vigilant and to reject any such solicitations, regardless of who is making the demand. This release follows reports of a circulating demand for a 20,000 FCFA contribution from students for thesis defense costs.
Reports from MMI News revealed messages across departmental WhatsApp groups, urging around 300 students to contribute to this covert fundraising campaign. If fully realized, the total amount could have approached six million FCFA, raising concerns of potential exploitation. The administration has responded strongly, underscoring the need for students to reject any unauthorized fees and to report such requests to relevant authorities. While the College remains committed to student welfare and institutional integrity, it has not clarified whether disciplinary measures will be taken against those responsible for initiating these payment demands. However, the notice serves to protect students from potential exploitation and to ensure compliance with institutional regulations.
