Cameroon’s political establishment is in mourning following the death of Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, the long-serving former Speaker of the National Assembly. He passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, in his native village of Mada, near Tokombéré in the Far North Region.
Cavaye Yeguie Djibril was 86. A towering figure in Cameroonian politics, he presided over the lower house of Parliament for 34 years from March 1992 until his replacement by Théodore Datouo on March 17, 2026. His tenure made him one of the longest-serving parliamentary speakers in Africa.
A key member of the Political Bureau of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), Cavaye was a pillar of the party’s leadership in the Far North. Beyond politics, he was also a respected traditional authority, serving as the Lamido of Mada in the Mayo-Sava Division.
