Residents of Buea took to the streets on Monday, May 18, for a unity and patriotic walk to mark the 54th edition of Cameroon’s National Day.
Held under the theme “National Unity: Backbone of the Defense System, Bedrock of Cameroon’s Development,” the march brought together citizens from across the South West Region. Participants included administrators, judges, academics, civil society groups, students, youth organizations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and security forces.
Senior officials at the event included Governor of the South West Region Bernard Okalia Bilai, the President of the South West Regional Assembly, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, the Buea Divisional Officer, and Buea Council Mayor David Mafani Namange Esq.
Participants moved through the city’s main streets carrying messages of unity and togetherness, highlighting patriotism as key to strengthening national defense and driving development. Organizers said the turnout reflected the population’s commitment to peace, national integration, and coexistence despite ongoing challenges.
Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai praised the large turnout and urged citizens to uphold the values of unity, tolerance, and civic responsibility. The event was presented as a demonstration of Buea’s role in promoting peaceful coexistence and national solidarity.
