My Name Campaign: Buea Council Mayor Urges Parents to Verify Pending Birth Certificate Applications

The Buea Council has stepped up efforts to make sure every child in the municipality has a legal identity, calling on parents to verify pending birth certificate applications under the “My Name Campaign Project.”

The campaign, launched at the Mayors’ Conference in Yaoundé in 2024, is aimed at boosting civil registration and protecting children’s right to an identity across Cameroon.

The mayor of the Buea municipality, David Mafani Namange has urged parents and guardians whose children aged 1 to 12 applied last year but haven’t received their certificates to visit the Civil Status Registration Office at Room 101/102.The verification exercise is meant to confirm children’s names and avoid duplication during production.

In the press release, the mayor stated that some certificates couldn’t be issued earlier because they required a declarative judgement, and court delays slowed the process. He added that, those administrative and judicial bottlenecks have now been cleared, allowing the council to move forward with producing the documents.

Council management added that several birth certificates from the 2025 campaign are still uncollected despite repeated notices. Parents and guardians have therefore been asked to collect the birth certificates, since they are needed for school enrollment, healthcare access, and to safeguard children’s rights.

With the campaign moving into its 2026 phase, the Buea Council remains committed to ensuring every child is legally recognized and officially documented.
