Issa Tchiroma Bakary Condemns Rape of Pupil in Yaoundé, Calls for Stronger Child Protection Policy

The National President of the Cameroon National Salvation Front party, Issa Tchiroma Bakary has condemned the rape of Joyce Nawal, a pupil at Gloire Olympique School in Odza, Yaoundé, and called for urgent action to strengthen child protection in Cameroon.

In a statement, Issa Tchiroma Bakary said he learned of the case “with chilling dismay, just like our fellow citizens.” He described the act as heinous and said the public anger and indignation it sparked, including a spontaneous demonstration by women in front of the school, were “commensurate with the gravity of this deeply troubling situation.”

“School is, and must remain, a sanctuary for our children,” he stated. Bakary criticized what he said was a focus on repressing citizens demanding justice rather than seeking the truth and supporting the family.

He questioned how many more children would become victims before public outrage led to “strong measures and an effective policy of prevention, fight, and punishment aimed at eradicating” such crimes.

Under his leadership, Bakary said, a “genuine child protection policy, along with repression proportionate to the vulnerability of children, will be implemented to replace the abysmal void of the current system.” He described exemplarity and firmness as “two indispensable requirements to deter all satanic predators” who endanger children and weaken society.

Issa Tchiroma Bakary explains that he associates himself with the pain of the child and her family and joins citizens demanding that “the full strength of the law be brought to bear, with uncompromising severity upon every member of the chain of responsibility, and all those guilty of this abject act, this abominable crime.”
