Cameroon’s U17 campaign at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations came to an end on Sunday, May 24, after a 1-0 defeat to host nation Morocco in a tense quarter-final at Pitch 8 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé. The loss sees the baby lions bow out of the tournament, while Morocco advances to the semi-finals.
The match opened at a high tempo, with both sides chasing continental glory. Cameroon created the first clear chance in the 13th minute when forward Arnold Massokon slipped behind the Moroccan defense, only to be denied by a crucial save from goalkeeper Rayan Yaakoubi. The missed opportunity proved costly. Four minutes later, Mohamed Habib Zinbi capitalized on a gap in Cameroon’s defense to fire home the lone goal in the 17th minute, giving Morroco’s U-17 lions the lead they would hold to the final whistle.
Statistically, Cameroon dominated large parts of the game. Coach Alioum Saidou’s side controlled 69% possession, fired 29 shots with 8 on target, and earned 8 corners compared to Morocco’s 5 shots, 2 on target, and 1 corner. But despite the overwhelming attacking numbers, the baby Lions lacked the clinical edge needed to convert pressure into goals.
Several long-range efforts were either sailed over or swallowed by Morocco’s disciplined low-block defense. Under Coach Tiago Lima Pereira, the side absorbed wave after wave of pressure, relying on defensive maturity and composure to protect their narrow lead.
The defeat is a bitter pill for a Cameroon side that showed character and tactical discipline throughout the tournament. While the continental dream ends here, the experience gained will be valuable for this promising generation. Both Cameroon and Morocco had already secured qualification for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup, so the focus now shifts to global development and building on what worked in Morocco.
Morocco moves on to face the Senegal in the semi-final. While the other semi-final clash will see Tanzania against Egypt following their quater finals victory over Algeria and Ivory Coast respectively.
