The Chair man of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC/CRM) Maurice Kamto has urged Cameroonians to preserve national cohesion and overcome divisions.
He made the call in a message shared on social media to mark the 54th anniversary of National Unity Day on May 20, 2026.
According to him, Cameroon is “a land of faith and promise” shaped by a shared history, despite the divisions and disagreements that run through society. He stressed the need to strengthen ties between the country’s different communities and called for building a Cameroon that is “more united and prosperous.”
“Our people, united in their rich diversity, are, despite our quarrels, bound together by a shared history of struggles and hardships,” he wrote. “Let us not deceive ourselves: if even one of our communities were to disappear, the others would be inconsolable, if only because they would no longer be able to vent their anger on it. Let us work together to build a strong, more united Cameroon and to achieve shared prosperity. Happy National Unity Day!”
The statement brought the issue of living together and national solidarity back to the forefront of public debate, a theme regularly highlighted during May 20 celebrations. The day is observed annually as a symbol of the unity of the Cameroonian state and the coexistence of its diverse communities.
