The President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya, has announced a forthcoming adjustment to the schedule for the legislative and municipal elections originally set for the first half of this year, 2026.
Addressing the nation particularly the youths on February 10, President Paul Biya revealed an important update regarding the schedule of the legislative and municipal elections. Citing pressing constraints, the president emphasized the need for a slight readjustment in the electoral calendar while reaffirming his commitment to uphold relevant provisions in the law, particularly the constitution.
However, President Paul Biya did not elaborate on the specific nature of these constraints or the potential new timeline for the elections. The announcement comes after a previous postponement of the elections last year, which had already raised concerns and speculations among the public about the electoral process in the country.
This revelation from the head of state would give time to opposition political parties to enhance their preparations ahead of the new date. However, it might also hinder the active preparations of other parties that were actively mobilizing ahead of the elections.
