The Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, has commended the resilience and massive mobilization of young persons in Buea who took part in the National Youth Day celebration, noting that this year’s turnout was particularly significant after close to a decade of absence of such enthusiasm.
Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai was speaking on February 11, 2026 at the Independence Square ceremonial ground in Buea following a vibrant march past for the 60th edition of the National Youth Day. Despite heavy rains, youths from various public and private institutions turned out in large numbers to celebrate the 60th edition of the National Youth Day.
The event featured a vibrant march past, with youths carrying placards with sensitization messages showcasing their commitment to the occasion and national unity.The governor of the Southwest region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, while presiding over the event, highlighted the head of state message to the youth while commending the commitment and resilience of youths in Buea.
“The young men of the South West region in particular and those of Buea have demonstrate their resilience, their determination, their commitment that under the sun, under the rain, they are mobilized. And we want to congratulate them. Yesterday, the Head of State in his message to the Youth congratulated the you of Cameroon. But I think here in Buea they deserve twice to be thanked.”
He further appreciated the mobilization, saying that the turnout was particularly significant after a decade of absence of such enthusiasm.
“Today, we have come back definitely to what we were used to ten years ago. More than three hours of march past, it means the mobilisation was huge and despite the rain the march past went on. So I want to expressed my full gratitude and satisfaction to the youth of Buea and the South West.”
The 60th edition of the National Youth Day was celebrated under the theme, Youth at the Heart of Great Hopes, for a united, stable and prosperous Cameroon”, emphasizing the crucial role of youths in nation building and national development.
